Production of 1933 double eagle
To end the crisis of the 1930s, the General Bank, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102, in 1933 the Gold Reserve Act in 1934, prohibiting the circulation and private possession of gold coins of the United States for general circulation, with the exception of numismatic value coins. This act declared that gold coins are no longer legal tender in the United States, and people had to surrender their gold coins for other forms of currency. From 1933 two gold medals Eagles were minted after this decree, but because they had more legal tender, most of 1933 gold coins were melted down at the end of 1934 and some were destroyed in testing. Two of the Eagle Two of $ 20 were presented by the collection of Mint of the United States currency to the U.S. citizen and recently have been presented in "coins and medals Hall, Third Floor, National Museum of American History.
Both sides have to be the Only 1933 Double Eagle coins in existence. However, behind the Mint, a number of rooms (20 have been recovered to date) have been stolen, possibly by the U.S. Mint Cashier, George McCann. At least nine of these pieces, which prohibits the possession, found its way through Philadelphia jeweler Israel Switt hands collectors.
The documents distributed by collectors for many years before the secret services are aware of their existence. The case was brought to the attention of officials of the Mint where the journalist investigation focused on the history of coins and contacted the Mint as part of its investigation, after a formal investigation was initiated by the secret services in 1944. Seven of these pieces have been discovered and handed over to federal agents (or seized) in the first year of the survey, with a room to stay in public ownership until 1952
